Yes. All non‑domestic premises require a fire risk assessment under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The duty sits with the Responsible Person, for example the employer, landlord, or building operator.

Keep it under review and update it after any significant change, for example building works, occupancy changes, a fire incident, or new processes or equipment. As a rule of thumb, plan a formal review annually, then update sooner if risks change.

The law requires a competent person. That means someone with the training, knowledge, and experience to assess your type of premises and recommend proportionate measures. Many organisations choose third‑party accredited specialists for assurance and independence.

Expect a site walk‑through, review of documentation and maintenance records, evaluation of hazards and people at risk, and testing of key management arrangements. The report will highlight non‑conformities and provide practical recommendations with priorities and timescales.

A standard assessment checks the adequacy of compartmentation at a high level. If there are concerns about penetrations, fire stopping, or door performance, a dedicated compartmentation survey may be recommended. This is more intrusive and may require access above ceilings or within risers.
